During the Death in the Family story, the Joker lures Todd from Batman with promises to reunite him with his long lost mother. The Joker locks him in a warehouse and beats him to death with a Crowbar before blowing up the warehouse.
Raj Al Ghul and his daughter Talia later resurrected Todd, who feeling anger towards Batman, decides to work alone on a crusade against crime, along with Speedy, and Starfire from Teen Titans.
