I know that the maps were supposed to be approximations and you were supposed to fill the gaps in your head, but I always found the starting towns really bland. Pallet Town at least has the gardens, but maybe just one additional feature, like a statue, plaza, railroad tracks, a farm, anything to give the town character. Anything to make the town less of two houses and a lab and more "small japanese countryside."
