reasonably speaking, GF was going to have to do this eventually. having pokemon's network features entirely in the cloud means that they can keep all pokemon in play for competitive and trading purposes, but without having to recode all the out-of-battle stuff for every pokemon
It probably won't happen that way, but i have hope
