If you think is too squishy, try waiting a bit so it has more of a model clay consistency. About the cracking, I really don't know how you go about modeling, so it might not be just the material fault
though I think your problems could be in the paint, I used to use acrylic and it always ended up absorbing too much of the paint and getting sticky and squishy, I use fabric paint now, is much better. but since you left this one at the end, does that mean is just a detail?
honestly I would need much more details to try to understand what's the problem, but in the end, only you can solve it. keep practicing and keep making mistakes until you get it right, it's how you learn probably. sorry for this lousy ''advice'' and good luck! I hope I can see your art someday
