Maybe it really was because the internet and fanbase aren't as large as they were back in Generation 1, but I breezed right through the linear routes and the "Go here, then here, then here and drop this off" idea of gameplay. I don't see how anyone could excuse the shite AI and movesets of the earlier generations as "it was harder back then". I still believe it's all in our heads, as the shared knowledge of boss placement and the metagame of the typechart is really to blame to easiness of the game. Granted, the day one access of the Kanto starter megas and the bare bones bosses in X and Y didn't really help matters. If more hacks of the games mixed up the effectiveness of the types it might spark the older generations of fans' interest, I think.
