The problem is where Magic expanded with new card types, and Yugioh delved into new summoning conditions, Pokemon stayed relatively the same.
Pokemon still has the same basic card types as when the game started, with a few minimal changes. VMax function basically the same as GX, which are functionally the same as EX, or Lv. X. The difference isn't really there minus a small change in prize cards, or a one shot move.
That kind of change is nowhere near as drastic as when Wizards made Planeswalkers, or transforming flip cards. Or even when Yugioh debuted pendulums.
As an example in Yugioh currently every single type of monster has some level of viability, especially with the new master rule, XYZ didn't invalidate synchros or fusions, they offered a different solution to the problem of winning the game.
