"losing the plot" doesn't mean that the games instantly became shit. but gen 3 was the first time there was a major design shift and it established trends that the series stuck to until the switch era. (or maybe it's still sticking to those trends. i don't know, i never played any of the switch games.)
you can say the magic was gone by gen 4 or 6 or 7. but they're all closer to gen 3 than gen 3 is to gens 1 and 2.
