The Gym Leader was recently appointed for the job and has yet to figure out a puzzle, so she just makes a mock trainer gauntlet of sorts where you fight the Gym Trainers, who use pretty typical dime-a-dozen Fighting types barring a running theme of Meditite being common, and each one having a different Hidden Power. They all look pretty concerned about the management, for some reason.
The area always has this field effect present, although I imagine the sand is more just 100% black.

And some additional details for the fuck of it: After the Gym Battle, you learn the Gym Leader soon temporarily resigns and joins you in your journey as a Rival, under the pretense that she would like to go on a journey to think about things, like whether or not she should continue being a Gym Leader. I can see her using Psychic and Fighting Pokemon mainly, with some outliers like Staraptor or some shit.
