I'm just gonna level with you guys. You're all fighting over convergent evolutions and regional variants, but there's a reason GF didn't continue calling them variants. Originally, they were going to be new regionals, but they hit a weird legal snag vis a vi trademark law, and realized they could have some trouble with merchandising if they continued to produce new pokemon that shared a trademark. They already had new designs in the game, so they just called them their own species and trademarked them as such. You're fighting over some stupid inside baseball legalese.
