The gym leader battle theme is everything I hoped it wouldn't be. Listen to the gym leader themes from Gens 1-5. Shit, even listen to Gen 7's Kahuna theme and the gym battle theme from Go. They all have strong composition. There's melody, proper build up and tension in these themes. In other words there's actual substance to them and they're all fitting for battles against important trainers.
And then there's Sword and Shield's gym leader theme. It's repetitive and lacks any real punch to it. It contains none of the aforementioned elements. It's pure techno wank. XY's at least had a melody and build up.
Now I don't have a problem with this style of music, it can be done pretty well. But it's clear that Masuda needed to show how huge of a hard on he has for this kind of music, and he does it in the most shallow way possible.
