They do have other religious carnivals in Latin America where masks are common but they don't have a name as recognizable a "Mardi Gras". Meowscarada's dark typing and hornlike mask could be a reference to carnival characters based on demons that prank and hit people. I can already imagine an early draft having more demon-like horns and appearance with the sensors crying that it was "satanic".
