there's still a decent amount of stuff that could be done with these games in terms of pokemon for pokemon's sake, such as corroborating it with other components of the franchise at the same time. the same way the TCG had impostor professor oak (who also later appeared in the anime, in a manner of speaking) and other scrapped elements of the game present from the get-go, there are other things people are overlooking like the fact the first 3 pokemon cards of togepi all mention its ability to secrete poison. this could well have come from a scrapped dex entry for togepi, and all the other gen 2 pokemon who got cards before GS came out (slowking, marill, ledyba, probably others) also have dex entries on their cards ranging from slightly different when compared to the in-game version, to completely different
