I think people forget that having a female partner was a standard to these games, usually the magic user while you're the male MC who uses guns and swords.

Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers got Rei and Nemissa
It's an interesting feature. Like a relic of when monster recruitment was seen as just one mechanic and not something people thought could be its own subgenre, so it gives you a human magic user for your normie human protag. I also think Rei and Nemissa are arguably the predecessors to starter mons, since the start of the games made you pick one of three styles of magic for them to use.
After Nocturne, the protag could use magic, and IV has the mechanic of learning magic from demons so that explains that.
