since hacking was primitive, we had to figure out every pokemon moves, abilities, stats and shinies, we had to figure most of the game content by playing them, the restricted meta was so awesome and you actually felt encouraged to trade/breed, especially with everybody sharing their friend safari codes, the speculation stuff like the power plant, the elevator girl, heatran in lumiose and many stuff made pokemon feel gain like a community, playing while you were online and having the pss and sending "nices" was so good.
