I usually find it easiest to build around one or two specific pokemon. For example the team I used in the example above was built around excadrill.
Another fun exercise that can work if you already have a solid team built and want to move on to a new team is to try and counter-team your old team. The idea is that if your old team is a good team then a team that can beat it pretty reliably should be a good team also (as long as you don't get too specific and dumb with it). For example I built this team coming off of the success of my old team (
