Maybe it's just the Finnish dubs. In Finnish the characters are a lot more energetic than in Japanese or English. The Finnish voice actor of Ash is basically shouting every line. This is precisely why I liked Pokemon as a kid: Ash was serious, respectable and cool.
Then I jumped to Sun & Moon and suddenly Ash has regressed into a happy-go-lucky 8-year-old.
