X and Y play basically like traditional pokemkn games, almost completely. It's an extremely natural move from BW while Sun/Moon are entirely redesigned from the formula up. Like no gym leaders and the island instead of land region.
I think the only real fuckery is X/Y's obvious third title being canned so sun/moon could release a year early. They shoved half the unresolved stuff like zygarde onto it.
But because it was so rushed most of the actual content only exists in us/um. Their schedule is so fucked that LGPE was a mess as well.
They need to push 2019 to 2020. If they dont at this rate 2019 pokemon is gonna be total shit, worse than anything before. Metroid prime 4 beta tier.
