Nerds were furious about them on old 4chan, with the general gist being that GF was running out of ideas. It's probably why you see less of them these days, or have them attached to regional forms instead.
I'm pretty neutral to most of them, but they generally have a villainous motif that can put people off, and some of them diverge pretty hard from the original mon they're attached to. My least favorite is ambipom. Yanmega also doesn't really look like a pokemon to me.
