Looking at the sprites also taught me something about how sprites are likely designed in this style. All of them look like you start by drawing a circle at the center, then different sized ellipses for the limbs. Then you erase some lines and work in the final shape.
If you look at particularly gen 1 and 2 monster sprites the same seems to be true. The style is rounded, but not excessively so. The main body has a softness to it that is then given character by the edges of the extremities.
TL;DR good sprites are made in Sugimori style and Getaz sprites can be useful in learning how to sprite Fakemon this way.
