Everything we've seen of it is just a massive, flat empty space with Pokémon popping up out of the ground willy nilly when you get close. It looks awful and I can't imagine it's all that fun to play in either.
As much of a cliche as it is at this point, I'm going to have to point you in the direction of Xenoblade to show you how both of these things done correctly. That series does a great job with both open area design and with incorporating the wildlife into those areas in a way that feels more natural, and was doing so all the way back on the fucking Wii.
