Decided to use Nidoran after all, it's a pretty great pokémon for these runs. Having an almost entirely male team against Whitney went about as well as you'd expect. Nobody died and Strength wiped house, but it was frustrating as hell. Lot's of evolutions all around as well, which is neat.
Also I'm suprised it took 3 badges to encounter a Pidgey.
