The hallmark of Pokemon movies started with having creatures way more powerful than the rest flaunt their abilities. Anyway, you did see it in 2001. I remember distinctly there were still bootlegs sold in Asian kiddy stores, custom Pokemon merchandise at flea markets, kids still talking about it plenty, etc. People were excited for the announcement of Ruby and Sapphire, but it being on the new Gameboy Advance was one of the obstacles for a portion of people to bother keeping up. Conversation started going downhill. It was still there, but obviously not at the same level.
