The stupid things he did was rely on one pokemon alone and forgot that gym leaders tend to have counters for their weaknesses. That is a lesson he learned all the way back in Kanto. The lesson the you're pulling out of your ass doesn't make any sense since we've seen Ash beat plenty of gyms using type advantages.
