May was the first main character to have an Eevee, back then we never had a main cast member with Eevee and besides Gary's which we only saw for 1 episode, it felt like something new at the time. Then we got stuck with Eevee multiple times after.
Looking back I'm surprised Dawn didn't get stuck with an Eevee too for that matter. But I remember how surprised I was May got an Eevee, it wasn't really treated as a mascot pokemon at the time.
