I think Gen 1/2 has probably the most consistent reputation, because Taijiri was the man behind Pokemon's original vision. A quiet, mostly open-ended adventure across rural parts of Japan. As the series got further and further away from that vision, we start to see the divides; Hoenn and Sinnoh "complicated" the series with grandiose monsters and gods and world ending plots. Unova was a linear, character-drive JRPG in an urbanized Region based on America, and with no familiar faces. Some people love these differences, others don't. And so here we are, with fans going to war over what Pokemon "should" be.
