However, I think it's interesting that the One Piece manga and Pokemon anime actually both started in the same year. Despite that it's almost sad how much better One Piece has handled its story compared to Pokemon over that time.
Over 20 years One Piece has kept the same main characters from the beginning while adding new ones, and has been constantly developing them. The Straw Hats have always felt like they are progressing both in power and as people, and they have always felt fresh and captured hearts for 20 years. They've even aged. Also being a long-running series hasn't stopped the author from constantly bringing back plot lines and characters from over a decade ago, which helps unify the series nicely.
Compare to the Pokemon anime, where Ash is constantly having any development he gains as a trainer and a character wiped, and the main characters are treated as little more than shiny new toys to be thrown away after a couple years.
The Pokemon anime fucked up hard.
