One of the great things about this franchise is that you can normally find something that both appeals to you and does the job, be it for ingame/competitive/whatever. Legendaries though tend to get shoved in your face to a greater or lesser degree in each of the games, so using them is less a matter of choosing something you like out of a wide selection and more a case of being given the "best" (even though they aren't always) on a silver platter.
This is an emotional response, not a logical one though. And even amongst the legendaries, reception is varied. I happen to love the Regi's, the lesser trios in general tend to be reasonably popular.
