HGSS especially fall into that. Take your time and explore. HGSS are the most soulful games in the franchise other than the original GSC.
I would've said play HG over SS for a first time, as I think Ho-Oh and the Bell Tower will give you an overall better impression, but SoulSilver's just as good ignoring that.
You should also play Emerald and Platinum. I would say Emerald, Platinum and HGSS are the only Pokémon games that actually matter. Gen 5 may be of interest, but that's when the franchise started becoming gay and linear and started putting more focus on the humans rather than the Pokémon. It may be your thing, try it if you enjoy the other games.
