I know the games and anime aren't 1:1 but it's so cynical to take a character who in the games is meant to represent the next generation coming into their own and just completely humiliate her. It just comes across as cynical, but this is the franchise that refused to let Ash win a league for 20+ years so I guess it's appropriate. Alder competing as his swan song as champion makes more sense.
