Kalos fought Paldea in their war, and AZ's weapon landed in Paldea's crater and made the million year old crater deeper, and radiated Terapagos, making him Patient Zero for Terastalizing, and a reason why there were time paradoxes in the crater, as the laser is said to have done this in ORAS, too.
Mega Evolution works in the way of genetic regeneration confirmed by the Primals Kyogre and Groudon and implied by Roaring Moon, so Mega Evolution is a cross between the effects of the laser; time regression/progression and crystalized type changing.
AZ aimed for Paldea's crater because Terapagos was already established to be a treasure to them, so hopefully aiming at their precious treasure would end the war.
Heath discovered a handful of Paradox Pokemon because of the laser's time-space effect, as they were only found as deep as Heath ever went, so no one ever saw them because they never went as deep as Heath, until the Professor used their time machine to bring more from the past/future.
It's not perfect, but it sure helps me wrap my head around the concept better than what GameFreak gave us.
Also an anon in another thread mentioned crystalized Pokemon are what mega stones came from, too, and that Glimmora looks like the weapon and was probably created from the weapon's effects, too.
