>>42153965It was worked by Shadow, Moogle and Ned through 97 and early 98. The logo on the previous screenshot was made by Timko. Version 0.18, which is the one I managed to find, translates up to Pewter City and it has a lot of the battle engine also translated. From what I can find, two out of the three people who worked on it are well known in the romhacking community (if I remember correctly there's an article about their involvement on the FFV translation) and are also still active and reachable.
It doesn't localize anything, Oak is still called Ookido, and also monster and item names are transliterations on the best case and garbled strings in the worst scenarios. It's still neat to see what a late 90s fan-translated Gen I Pokémon might've looked like in case it never left Japan.
The FAQ mentions someone who goes by Pikachu who was credited as the person who got Ned (the hacker writing the FAQ) into Pokémon but, again according to the FAQ, died 2 weeks prior to the translation's first release. Then again the FAQ mentions that "the series of kana that caused many
japanese kids to have seizures has been removed", so it might just be an inside joke.
Here's a link to the patch with the included utilities and documentation, in case anyone wants to toy with it.
