Square would be incredibly ballsy in changing up the formula, combat, mechanics, and even the setting between games, for better or worse. What Game Freak is doing with the Legends games now would've already been done 20 years ago.
The age demographic would be a bit older (early-mid teens, mainly). Elements like multiplayer would be an afterthought, if they bothered at all, while the single player campaigns would be stronger (than what Pokemon offers at least). At the very least, the games would be a lot more graphically and musically better than what Game Freak ever produced.
