The Dub didn't clarify what exactly happened though, which caused May to go to Johto.
It wasn't because of Drew himself out of "love". She REALLY wanted to stay with Ash. However, like Dawn, she too had her own agenda to fulfill.
Which was her dream of becoming Top Coordinator.
"May vs Drew: Rivals Forever" even showed this, as May was perpetually upset at the fact that her entire strategy that she used throughout her Contest career up until that point was simply pure offense, which made her lose against Solidad at the Kanto GF.
Brock and Scott both talked about May's dilemma from the sidelines, stating on how her said Contest style, was highly reminiscent of Ash's.
As a result, even when Ash WANTED to help her improve, like he had in the past (ex: all those times in Hoenn), she flat out refused, because she knew that training with Ash wouldn't do anything for her goal.
That's why she made up her mind to go to Johto after that episode. Harley and Solidad were going as well, and she wanted to follow her rivals to the end, in order to attain said goal.
Hence, why I don't see much between May and Drew, when the show itself refers to the two as rivals, similarly to Ash and Gary, or Paul.
