I dropped Pokemon for over a decade sometime after Pokemania ended during gen 3 and picked the Franchise back in SM. When I played the DS era, I thought it was ok but I never developed any significant attachment to it.
And this will be the same for any kid who will play past games retrospectively.
The only thing thing that makes a Pokemon game "good" is nothing but familiarity. Pokemon in general is a mediocre franchise for kids that's always years behind the current standard.
