I felt the base games were okay but definitely on the weaker side for the series, primarily due to lack of content. Still solid games but propped up by existing mechanics/features with the new strengths being more in places like presentation and openness.
I think the expansion pass is ideal as it will fix the limited content problem, while getting rid of all the issues a third version has (having to replay, no maintaining of in-game progression in general like items)
I think they should drop the yearly release format and take on a two year format with DLC in the off years, actually.
