If you want to grab an NPC without obstacles, use a Pokémon with Substitute, place the substitute next to the NPC, and that’s it — the attack has a hitbox.
By the way, yesterday I beat Mega Starmie—and it kicked my ass twice, which was actually pretty fun. I finally got the Mega Stone, so now it’s time to do another 20 battles to level it up to at least 50 and then go fight Mega Tyranitar!
