Bringing the journal to the fossil restoration center in Alola triggers a cutscene where the player overhears a conversation between the fossil maniac and Colress. Afterward Colress spots the journal and invites the player on an expedition with him to the island marked on the charts.
A chartered boat takes you to the island, where following a jungle path full of bug type pokemon, you find an abandoned, overgrown research lab adorned in Team Plasma insignias. A sign reads P2 Lab Alola Branch. The lab is surrounded by dugouts full of damaged skeletons and ancient pokemon fossils.
Investigating the lab causes a series of weird sounds and for Colress to warn you that you're not alone, at which point pic related jumps out and you have the chance to catch it. Colress briefly challenges you afterward threatening to take the Genesect before regaining his composure and stating that he's satisfied with the data he got from the battle instead.
