it was about mega evolution more than anything. the entire process, from start to finish, with everything that could go wrong. it also established ash's relationship with korrina to make his impending victory more believable, apparently a theme this season. ash learned about megas and his opponent.
if they worried too much about developing other characters, the arc would become muddled and lose focus. it was an interesting look at an aspect of pokemon not necessarily focused on the main characters, and it also had some of the best battles in the series. i enjoyed it.
