I'm kinda in the center. It's okay that GF is playing to their strengths, but for over a decade i've felt that they've always been far behind other developers that clearly put passion and ambition into their projects.
Pokemon is and always has been an entry-level RPG. That's fine and dandy on it's own, but ironically, for a series themed around evolution, Pokemon has hardly changed in over 2 decades. The only way you could consider the games "Amazing" is if they're the only RPGs you played. Nearly every other RPG brings more to the table, whether gameplay-wise, Presentation-wise or even both. When you love something, you want to see it improve. That's why i can see why people want the games to be unreasonably better: Many have set their sights higher and experienced improvements in other franchises and want this other beloved franchise to make similar strides. Granted, many are spoiled brats throwing tantrums, but at least there is a reason behind the complaints, and that is that Gamefreak could genuinely try a bit harder to improve their game instead of relying on crutches. I'll definitely buy Sword, but if you told me i could push a button and make it more like, i don't know, DQ 11, Xenoblade or even the SMT/Persona series, i'd do it in a heartbeat. There are many good things Pokemon could borrow from those and other series in order to grow.
