I thought maybe because of the mounted image he might have been based off saint george, who in turn may have his imagery based off the Thracian Horseman, or the Thracian Hero, who was a Thracian deity depicted in horseback often slaying a boar. Similarly St George is depicted as a horseman slaying a dragon in a similar fashion as the Thracian Hero. St. George being the patron saint of England it makes sense?
