While other games allowed you to travel where you want, when you want, in Unova you're stuck on a track until the very end. The entire Black and White game can be summed up in the following:

New Town
v
Plot related event
v
Gym match
----
(you cannot pass this point until you defeated the gym leader)
And repeat until you reach the Elite four. As for the story:
-Boohoo my sisters dumb cat
-We're evil and trying to take over the world
-Friendship is magic
Why would anyone defeated such trash is beyond me
