If truth must be spoken, and such should be always the case, Ash could have gotten May if he wanted to, but he is concerned only in becoming a pokemon master. In this regard Ash is pretty similar to Goku, the latter only married because he gave his word, wouldnt surprise me if something alike happens with Ash.
