MPM Ash feels like the type of "seasoned old legend" character in an anime that shows up very rarely early on, and deftly handles a huge problem, making it look simple. Meanwhile the more inexperienced protagonist was struggling or outright failed to deal with said problem. All in order to show just how much further the protag has to go. Except Ash used to be that rookie protag, and now he is the seasoned adventurer.
