Like Murkrow rapes Gardenia immediately after being caught and it counters Maylene and Fantina well enough. Stunky's another good Dark type. Hope you're playing Diamond if you like using Dark types, cause otherwise you'll be relying on Safari Zone fuckery or Sneasel with no Ice Punch.
And Cranidos sucks cock but it's loads better than Shieldon. I can't think of a single situation where that thing would be useful in a playthrough of DP. Fantina maybe?
As for Pearl, you get Glameow, an objectively worse Aipom, and you can't even get it until after Surf. The fuck? Misdreavus is good enough but it's baggage until level 23. Pretty much just a worse Murkrow.
The only thing Pearl has over Diamond is the better box art legend, but it's an unspoken rule not to use those in a playthrough. SAD!
