After Jhoto there's a set of episodes called Pokemon Chronicles that show what the side characters are up to during the Advance Series. Those are pretty good.
The formula mostly gets changed up by the female trainer (May, Dawn, Serena) taking part in Pokémon Contests while traveling with Ash. Team Rocket still tries to steal Pikachu but also end up helping defeat whatever evil team is around which in the end keeps them on Giovanni's good side.
There's a brief moment where Team Rocket actually become effective in the Black and White anime, then the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami happened just before an episode where Rocket and Plasma were going to face off and that whole plot line got dropped.
