The gym is a massive greenhouse that is located behind an university. The university is a building where the most talented Trainers can continue their study not only on Pokemon, but also study the history of the world itself and to let the Trainer's talents use for different purposes other than battling. The greenhouse is build as a project by the university to study Bug Pokemon.
The gym is pretty much a Greenhouse where bugs are allowed to roam free, so Wild bug can be encountered in the Grass if you desire to catch some fully evolved early bug Pokemon like Butterfree or Beedrill. However, this is completely optional.
The main gimmick of the gym is tricking the trainer into thinking its not a big deal because its a bug type gym, but then get stomped really hard really fast if they aren't careful. Gimmicks include Compound Eyes Butterfree, Galvantula w/Spider Web, Vivillon sweep, normal trainer mega-evolving bug Pokemon and Drapion. My strategy that fits with the gimmick is Baton Pass abuse.
