It really wasn't as tedious as I thought it would be, trading over the net gets it done real quick and it would be even faster today because people have had both more games and more time to migrate stuff from older gens.
I had the entire living dex bar a few legendary mons in a few weeks of casual play, you could do it much faster if you planned it out and dedicated like a weekend to doing it. Getting a full living dex was one of the most satisfying things I've ever done, not just in pokemon but gaming in general.
But yeah these are the first games where you only need the regional dex rather than national for the shiny charm. Kinda cheapens the whole shiny thing even more.
