Thing is, the AI in SM is atrocious, so he just kept using Swords Dance until Emergency Exit procced. Hell, his Ariados was more of a threat in all of his encounters. Can't agree with you on his Masquerain being tough, though; two widely resisted moves don't really do you much favors.
Also, I'm talking about HG/SS Bugsy. STAB U-Turn works wonders when you have two free switches in the form of Kakuna and Metapod. Along with Technician boosted Quick Attack, it makes Bugsy one of the hardest early gyms imho, next to Lenora.
