The lack of a full National Dex and absence of Altaria in the Alola Dex upsets me greatly. I'd love to see what they came up with for its Mega Evolution entry.

Trick is to get it in on something like a Rotom-W, bulky status users, choice-locked immunities like Ground or Dragon post-Mega evolving. Most of the time, once you drop the Sub against the opponent it's an insta-forfeit. Outspeeds base 135s at +1.

You pair it with a Magnezone to get ride of Skarm, Ferro, Scizor, etc.

It's also the best way to cockblock weather teams. Almost every weather sweeper is Adamant or Modest and gets outsped by Jolly Altaria. Kingdra gets bopped by Return, Excadrill and Kabutops get nipped by EQ (although I believe you miss the OHKO on these two if they're at 100% HP, you need at least Rocks up), M-Swampert is harder to get past but if they're running a weather-reliant Mega, they have team matchup advantage anyway.

Almost couldn't have worked out better. I was worried about the mixed approach to the offensive boosts when it was first announced, but it ended up great. The combination of type, movepool, bulk, and unpredictability is awesome. Overall pretty perfect as a Mega: it is solid and useful without being broken, and it vastly improved a Pokemon who was formerly very lacking. Also the design is cuddly and majestic.

I've been enjoying Gen 6 more than the average /vp/ user seems to, but FUCK was that a disappointment. The huge, wandering stretch between the first two gyms got me really hyped for the length and depth of the adventure in Kalos. I was expecting a lot of exploration, side-quests like Parfum Palace and the caves, and the possibility of some real story. Heck, maybe the level spacing would work well and the final battles at the League would be truly titanic clashes. Then it suddenly hit a wall and piled up on top of itself. I still had fun, and it wasn't much different from the length of any other game, but that initial part was such a tease for what a more fleshed-out game could be.

I do enjoy Megas though, in part because many of the less-powerful mons I like got good treatment.

It's one of the rare cases where they took a Pokemon that needed the power boost of a Mega and actually applied it well. It's no longer garbage, and it isn't a broken piece of shit, it's just a solid, versatile mon. The design builds on the base form, it looks cool and cuddly, and they got to tie it in with their new contest mechanics.

For the few people like me who liked Altaria back in the day and had left it behind due to it's inherent weakness, this thing was a gift. It's my favorite Mega so far.

Altaria is very good at a number of valuable roles. That versatility makes it unpredictable and powerful. It's quite threatening even though it wasn't min-maxed like a lot of other Megas.

The bulk, movepool, offenses, and ability are a great combination. Plus it has a nice design to go with it: it carries on both the cuteness and the mystical feel Altaria has always had, looks both cuddly and imposing. Probably my favorite Mega.
