DP Ash was no longer arrogant like in AG but he was still very much the same, goofy, kinda lazy and sometimes an ass. Sure he was more mature, experienced as a trainer, and an overall better person and mentor to Dawn but he still retained his basic characteristics. After the fuck up that was BW, Ash was all of a sudden a nearly perfect role model in XY, even his imperfections didn't stand out because the gang would still suck his dick no matter what. They turned him into this perfect HERO way too soon.
